TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) cast her vote at Jian-an Elementary School (建安國小) in Taipei at 1 p.m. on Saturday (July 26), drawing significant public attention. Tsai, who recently moved her household registration from Yonghe District (永和區) in New Taipei City to Da'an District (大安區) in Taipei, cast her ballot on whether to recall Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強). Lo himself had already voted at 10 a.m. that morning in the same polling station.
The former president made a low-key appearance at the polling station, yet a large crowd had gathered to see her. The crowd greeted Tsai with shouts of "Hello, President" as she arrived to cast her vote. Despite the media's attempts to engage her, Tsai only responded with a smile and a nod, refraining from making any comments.
Today's recall voting will decide the political fates of 24 legislators from the opposition KMT party, as well as the mayor of Hsinchu City. The results of the election could potentially shift control of the country's legislature from the KMT and Taiwan People's Party, a third party, to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which holds the presidency. The results of the recall vote will likely be clear by this evening.
