HUALIEN (TVBS News) — Kuomintang legislator Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁) survived a recall vote in Hualien County Monday (July 28), launching a victory motorcade through the eastern Taiwan region with his wife, County Magistrate Hsu Chen-wei (徐榛蔚). Township mayors joined the procession as Fu expressed gratitude to supporters who helped him retain his seat in Taiwan's legislature. The recall effort marks another failed attempt by opposition forces to remove KMT lawmakers from office.
Supporters waved small national flags and chanted "Go, Fu Kun-chi. Go!" as the motorcade passed through towns and cities across Hualien. Fu used a microphone to thank the public for their unity and support during the recall challenge. Meanwhile, independent county councilor Yang Hua-mei (楊華美) led recall campaign volunteers to Hualien Martyrs' Shrine to honor the 48,969 voters who supported removing the legislator from office.
Yang acknowledged the campaign's failure to make history but emphasized their efforts remained noteworthy despite the defeat. She urged recall supporters not to lose heart following the unsuccessful attempt to remove Fu from Taiwan's legislature. Yang encouraged her volunteers by highlighting the beauty of their collective selfless dedication to democratic participation and civic engagement. ◼
