TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chinese Television System (華視) will broadcast the Singaporean drama "Emerald Hill - The Little Nyonya Story" (小娘惹之翡翠山) at 8 p.m. on Monday (Aug. 4). The series, set in the 1950s, depicts the legendary tale of a family in the Nyonya ethnic group, which includes the descendants of Chinese and Malay mixed marriages. The production team heavily invested in carefully researching and creating historically accurate settings, furniture, decor, and costumes.
Kai Hsiu (修杰楷) plays Chang Chin-he (張金河), the second brother of the Nyonya family at the center of the show, and he is the sole Taiwanese actor in the series. This role marks his first long-term work away from home since getting married and starting a family. He expressed a deep longing for his family during the three to four months of filming in Singapore and noted the challenge of portraying a character burdened with repression and responsibility.
The series also features three female leads with dynamic character arcs. Ferlyn Wong (黃晶玲) plays Chang An-ya (張安雅), Natasha Low Yi Ling (劉怡伶) portrays Chang Hsin-niang (張心娘), and Chantalle Ng (黃暄婷) acts as Chang An-na (張安娜). Their performances shine alongside the three brothers, adding depth to the storyline.
Within the Chang family, Shaun Chen (陳泓宇) plays the eldest brother, Chang Chin-hai (張金海), who avoids family business matters, leaving company affairs to his brother Chang Chin-he. Meanwhile, Romeo Tan (陳羅密歐) depicts the youngest brother, Chang Chin-chuan (張金泉), who seeks to steal away the company.
