TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Elite Taiwan athletes Huang Mei-Chien (黃渼茜) and Johnny Sun (孫家閎) have been selected as national flag bearers for The World Games 2025 opening ceremony in Chengdu (成都), China, on Thursday (Aug. 7). Taiwan's Sports Administration (體育署), a division under the Ministry of Education (MOE, 教育部), made the announcement through Director Cheng Shih-Chung (鄭世忠) during Tuesday's (Aug. 5) official press briefing in Taipei.

Huang, Taiwan's decorated finswimming champion, boasts an impressive international record with gold medal victories in the 50m bi-fins event at both the 17th Asian Finswimming Competition and the prestigious CMAS World Finswimming Championship 2024. Her competitive achievements include an additional bronze medal in the 100m bi-fins category at the Asian competition. The accomplished athlete expressed profound gratitude for the flag-bearing honor, pledging to represent Taiwan with confidence during the ceremonial procession.

Sun, a distinguished practitioner of wushu (武術), the traditional Chinese martial art, returns to familiar territory after his outstanding performance at the 2023 Summer World University Games in Chengdu, where he captured gold in tai chi (太極) and silver in tai chi sword competitions. The martial arts master characterized his return to Chengdu as flag bearer as "a quiet arrangement of fate," expressing enthusiasm about demonstrating wushu's unique combination of aesthetic beauty and physical power on the international stage.

The Chinese Taipei delegation, Taiwan's official designation in international sporting competitions, brings a substantial contingent of 120 athletes competing across 14 diverse sporting disciplines. Team members have completed their arrival in Chengdu and currently utilize allocated practice sessions to acclimate to competition venues. Sports Administration officials expressed confidence in the delegation's preparation, noting their determination to compete with intensity and bring honor to Taiwan. ◼
