TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan faces a brewing tropical disturbance southeast of the island that could develop into a tropical depression, meteorologist Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) warned Friday (Aug. 15). Chia announced on his YouTube channel that atmospheric conditions will become slightly favorable for typhoon formation from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8. The environment will grow increasingly conducive to storm development from September 16 through the end of October.
Chia explained that unusually strong Pacific high pressure causes high temperatures and muggy conditions, with typical afternoon northwesterly showers. Tomorrow through Sunday, sporadic short showers will affect Taitung's coast to Eluanbi, with isolated afternoon showers in mountainous regions and Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Sunday afternoon will bring localized short showers south of Miaoli, with similar patterns expected Monday (Aug. 18) and Tuesday (Aug. 19).
Chia predicted that Wednesday (Aug. 20) morning will see sporadic showers along coastal regions south of Taichung, with localized afternoon showers in Taichung, Hualien, and Taitung. Thursday (Aug. 21) afternoon will bring localized short showers across Taiwan, followed by sporadic Friday afternoon showers. Mountain areas will experience sporadic afternoon showers from Saturday (Aug. 23) to Sunday (Aug. 24), with Chia urging attention to latest forecast updates. ◼
