TAIPEI (TVBS News) — People First Party (PFP, 親民黨) Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) led party officials and supporters in paying respects at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂) and National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine (忠烈祠) Wednesday (Sept. 3). Soong emphasized the profound significance of this commemorative day and highlighted its enduring importance for Taiwan and the Republic of China (ROC, 中華民國), Taiwan's official name. The ceremonial visits underscored the party's commitment to honoring historical memory and national identity.

Soong urged mainland China, the People's Republic of China, to clarify that the Sept. 3 military parade aims to showcase self-defense capabilities rather than aggressive military prowess. He stated China should assure Taiwan that cross-strait issues will not be resolved through force but through peaceful communication and mutual understanding. Soong stressed the critical importance of preserving the authentic history of the war, recognizing the ROC's victory against Japan and Taiwan's reintegration into the ROC as a pivotal historical moment.

Soong highlighted the shared historical memory of Taiwan and Penghu's return to the ROC, urging both sides of the Taiwan Strait to cherish the hard-fought victory of the war. He pointed out that Taiwan has successfully upheld democratic values under the ROC's governance for over 80 years, transitioning from an authoritarian regime to a thriving democratic society. The island simultaneously achieved remarkable economic miracles and fostered unprecedented social prosperity during this transformative period.

Soong called for deep reflection on the 80th anniversary of the war victory, urging people to cherish the hard-won peace and prosperity achieved under the ROC. He encouraged China to engage in meaningful communication with Taiwan and resolve cross-strait issues through careful coordination and dialogue. Soong envisioned both sides working together constructively to create a brighter, more prosperous future for the Chinese nation. ◼
