TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City labor inspectors uncovered widespread safety violations across Taiwan's ready-mixed concrete industry Wednesday (Sept. 3), finding 18 out of 20 companies failed to meet operational safety standards during targeted May inspections. The New Taipei City Labor Standards Inspection Office (新北市政府勞動檢查處) revealed the alarming results in an official press release, highlighting critical worker safety deficiencies. Authorities have mandated immediate improvements within specified timeframes to address these serious workplace safety concerns threatening industrial workers.
Labor officials highlighted the inherent dangers in ready-mixed concrete operations, which involve raw material transportation, mixing, and product delivery to construction sites. Despite the process's apparent simplicity, workers face serious hazards including falls from heights, machinery entanglement, and potentially fatal electric shock incidents. The inspection office organized a comprehensive awareness seminar in April, educating industry executives about mandatory health and safety regulations before launching the May inspection campaign. This strategic "educate first, inspect later" approach aimed to encourage proactive safety management improvements across the construction materials sector.
Officials disclosed the comprehensive inspection results, issuing seven substantial fines totaling NT$230,000 (around US$7,492) to companies with severe safety violations. Labor authorities additionally ordered eight companies to immediately halt operations until mandatory safety improvements are implemented and verified. Critical deficiencies included failures to install essential protective facilities, such as fall prevention systems and anti-entanglement mechanisms on feeding equipment. This widespread negligence poses significant worker safety risks, prompting officials to announce intensive future re-inspections. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$30.7)
