TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署), Taiwan's national weather service, issued an orange high-temperature alert on Monday (Sept. 8) for six major cities and counties, warning of continuous 36-degree Celsius (97°F) heat. Taipei City, New Taipei City, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County face the heightened alert level. Tainan City (台南市) received a yellow heat warning with temperatures also expected to exceed 36 degrees Celsius (97°F).
The weather administration has strongly advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, take comprehensive precautions against sun exposure, and maintain proper hydration throughout the day. Southern cloud systems moving northward will influence regional weather patterns, bringing sporadic short-lived showers or thunderstorms to the southern and Hualien-Taitung regions. Other areas across Taiwan can expect mostly cloudy to sunny conditions with minimal precipitation expected during this heat wave.
Residents should remain vigilant for localized short-term thunderstorms during afternoon hours, which may bring heavy rainfall, strong gusts, lightning, and other severe weather phenomena. The administration strongly recommends carrying appropriate rain gear when venturing outside during these conditions. To prevent heat-related illnesses, officials suggest keeping indoor environments well-ventilated and cool, employing methods like using fans or ice packs to lower body or ambient temperatures effectively. ◼
