TAIPEI (TVBS News) — An exhibition highlighting Penghu's military history and cultural heritage opened on Friday (Oct. 3). Titled "Towards Peace: Penghu Military History and Military Dependents' Village Story Exhibition" (潮向和平─澎湖軍事文史暨眷村故事特展), it runs through Nov. 30 at Duxingshi Village Cultural Park (篤行十村眷村文化園區), providing a comprehensive exploration of Penghu's strategic significance.
Chen Yu-yun (陳鈺雲), director of Penghu's Bureau of Culture (文化局), highlighted Penghu's strategic role in East Asian history at the exhibition's unveiling. Penghu was the site of major battles, including those between the Ming dynasty and the Dutch empire, and Chinese and Japanese conflicts. The exhibition features rare documents, artifacts, and interactive installations, depicting Penghu's wartime role and military dependents' life.
Prominent figures, including Wang Jui-hsien (王瑞賢) from the Penghu Defense Command (澎防部), artist Chen Shu-li (陳淑麗), and historians Chen Ying-chun (陳英俊) and Wang Wen-liang (王文良), attended the opening. Chen Shu-li, raised in a military dependents' village, stressed the importance of reflecting on history to understand peace.
The Bureau of Culture emphasized the exhibition's goal to educate the public on the impacts of war through Penghu's history. It aims to rediscover the role of military dependents' villages in modern Penghu history. Interactive experiences at the exhibition will let visitors record messages for the past or future.
