TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taoyuan City Government has conducted a comprehensive inspection of Datan Power Plant's (大潭電廠) new gas units 7 to 9, announced Friday (Oct. 3). Following safety concerns after a fire at Kaohsiung's Hsinta Power Plant (興達發電廠) last month, the government involved municipal departments and external experts to scrutinize safety, environmental checks, labor safety, and integrity of power and gas supply facilities.
Experts have recommended the early completion of equipment handovers for Datan Power Plant's units 7 to 9, the city government announced. Inaccuracies were noted in the nitrogen dioxide meter of unit 7, advising regular calibration by Taipower. Future Grade A disaster response drills should include the city government and Taoyuan's Department of Economic Development (經濟部), using a scenario-based, semi-alert, unscripted model.
Yao-Ting Wang (王耀庭), president of Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台灣電力公司), and vice president Sun Yu-hua (孫禹華) attended the inspection. Taipower stated that the investigation into the Hsinta Power Plant fire is ongoing and plans a comprehensive review for improvement measures. To prevent gas leaks at Datan Power Plant, Taipower implemented an emergency response SOP and deployed measures: inventorying gas detectors, inspecting pipelines, strengthening flange inspections, and updating fire response procedures.
The city government committed to gradually implementing expert recommendations at Datan Power Plant. They will submit inspection results to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (經濟部), urging the establishment of a long-term institutionalized regulatory model for national power plant safety improvements.
