TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung City Government (高雄市政府) launched an exhibition Tuesday (Oct. 7) showcasing a 2-nanometer wafer gifted by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) at the Siwei Administration Center (市府四維行政中心). The wafer features an acrostic poem spelling "The New Silicon Valley of the South" (大南方新矽谷), symbolizing the city's industrial transformation. Coded "K1A001.00," the wafer represents the first batch of 12-inch 2-nanometer wafers produced at TSMC's Kaohsiung plant this year.
The city government invited residents to visit the exhibit displaying the commemorative wafer on the first floor of the Siwei Administrative Center starting Tuesday (Oct. 7). Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) expressed gratitude to TSMC for the significant gift, stating it signifies a pivotal moment in Kaohsiung's, Taiwan's major southern port city, industrial transformation. The mayor emphasized the gift underscores the completeness of the emerging southern semiconductor ecosystem development.
Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) highlighted this significant milestone in his comprehensive policy report at the city council, Kaohsiung's local legislative body. He announced TSMC's P1 plant began equipment installation in late November last year and commences operations in the fourth quarter of this year. The subsequent P2 through P5 plants progress as scheduled, marking significant strides in Kaohsiung's ambitious industrial transformation.
Chen emphasized TSMC's developments in Kaohsiung will generate over 36,000 direct and indirect job opportunities for the regional economy. New reclaimed water plants in Ciaotou (橋頭區) and Nanzih Districts (楠梓區), administrative divisions in Kaohsiung, will supply 110,000 tons of recycled water daily to support operations. The infrastructure supports the burgeoning semiconductor industry while ensuring sustainable resource management for long-term industrial growth.
