TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan kicked off its National Day celebrations on Friday (Oct. 10) with elaborate flag-raising ceremonies across multiple cities, celebrating the 114th anniversary of the Republic of China. The Ministry of National Defense's (國防部) band performed at the Presidential Office Building while the Air Force's Thunder Tigers Aerobatics Team (雷虎小組) flew five Brave Eagle jets overhead, creating colorful smoke trails.
In a separate event, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) expressed delight in celebrating with local residents as streets displayed flags. The Kuomintang Party (KMT, 國民黨), Taiwan's main opposition party, also held a ceremony at its headquarters, attended by Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫), former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), and chairperson candidates.
In New Taipei City, Olympic boxing champion Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) led the national anthem at the ceremony held before the New Taipei City Art Museum (新北市美術館). Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) emphasized national unity, stating that the people's unity represents hope for the country's future. He asserted that a nation's strength comes from family unity and happiness during October's three consecutive long weekends.
Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) reflected on her seven years in office, expressing excitement over upcoming projects including the Taichung Green Museumbrary (綠美圖) and Convention Center. Lu noted the emotional impact of over 10,000 citizens attending, calling this period significant for municipal developments.
