TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) declared Friday (Oct. 10) that the island has achieved a historic democratic milestone, with days under democratic rule now exceeding those under martial law. Speaking at National Day celebrations at the Presidential Office Building (總統府), Lai proclaimed this achievement as Taiwan's definitive break from authoritarianism. The ceremony featured an aerial display by the Air Force's Thunder Tigers Aerobatics Team (空軍雷虎小組) using five Brave Eagle (勇鷹) jets.

Lai positioned Taiwan as Asia's democratic beacon amid global authoritarianism and international order challenges. He reaffirmed Taiwan's commitment to maintaining cross-strait stability while urging China to act responsibly. The president specifically called on Beijing to stop distorting U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758 and abandon using force to alter the Taiwan Strait status quo.

Marking the 80th anniversary of World War II's end, Lai announced dramatic defense spending increases. Taiwan's defense budget will exceed 3% of GDP next year, reaching 5% by 2030, as peace requires strength. The funding will accelerate the "Taiwan Shield" air defense system, integrate AI technologies for intelligent defense, and expand international defense industry collaboration.

Lai also celebrated Taiwan's economic leadership among the Four Asian Tigers, surpassing China in growth this year. He proposed an NT$93 billion (around US$3 billion) support package for businesses, workers, farmers, and fishermen affected by American tariffs. The president highlighted Taiwan's semiconductor and technology industries as crucial global supply chain assets benefiting all Taiwanese citizens.

Lai outlined extensive social initiatives his government is implementing across multiple sectors. These include the "Healthy Taiwan Deep Cultivation Plan" (健康台灣深耕計畫) and establishing a Ministry of Sports (運動部) to support national athletes. For younger generations, he announced free high school and vocational tuition, rental subsidies, and increased childcare allowances. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$30.589)
