TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese actress Shu Qi (舒淇) unveiled her directorial debut "Girl" (女孩) Monday (Oct. 27) alongside cast members Roy Chiu (邱澤), 9m88, Bai Xiao-Ying (白小櫻), and Golden Horse Award-winning actress Audrey Lin (林品彤). During a press conference, the actress revealed her decade-long emotional journey preparing the film. Shu Qi's directorial debut marks a significant milestone in her career.
The film won Best Director Award at the Busan International Film Festival in September. Shu Qi admitted feeling nervous returning to Taiwan, where the story unfolds. The director revealed her emotional vulnerability during preparation, stating she often felt anxious while maintaining confidence. Despite international recognition, Shu Qi expressed uncertainty about local reception.
Producer Yeh Jufeng (葉如芬) explained the film missed Golden Horse Awards (金馬獎), Taiwan's premier film awards, submission deadline July 31 because production remained unfinished. The team rushed to meet Venice Film Festival's September deadline instead. Shu Qi requested additional edits just days before release.
Shu Qi's husband, director Stephen Fung (馮德倫), expressed confusion about the film's male character. Shu Qi playfully responded that foreigners would not understand the cultural nuances. She noted her husband typically avoids work discussions but provides background support. Stephen Fung recently acknowledged Shu Qi's achievements at a Hong Kong event.
