TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's population declined for the 22nd consecutive month, reaching 23,310,853 by October 2025, according to official government statistics. The Ministry of the Interior (MOI, 內政部), Taiwan's domestic affairs agency, reported Monday (Nov. 10) a natural population decrease of 6,450 people and overall monthly decline of 6,178 from September 2025.
October births totaled 9,458, representing an increase of 855 from September but a significant decrease of 2,612 from October 2024, creating an annual crude birth rate of 4.78 per 1,000 people. Deaths reached 15,908 in October, marking increases of 457 from the previous year and 521 from September, resulting in a crude death rate of 8.03 per 1,000 people nationwide.
Migration statistics revealed a net influx of 272 people in October, with 62,594 individuals entering Taiwan and 62,322 departing the island nation. Taoyuan City, located in northern Taiwan, recorded the highest migration gain with 1,139 new residents, but overall population continued shrinking despite these positive migration flows.
Taiwan's population aged 65 and over reached 4,637,897, representing 19.9% of total population and dangerously approaching the World Health Organization's super-aged society threshold of 20%. Taipei City, Taiwan's capital, led aging trends with 24% of residents over 65, while Hsinchu County recorded the nation's lowest elderly rate at 14.95% of its population. ◼
