TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A surfer defied red flag warnings at South Bay (南灣) on Tuesday (Nov. 11) after Taiwan issued typhoon alerts. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) had warned that Typhoon Fung-wong (鳳凰颱風) threatens Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Hengchun Peninsula (恆春). Officials issued the safety alerts at 5:30 a.m. before the dangerous surfing behavior occurred.
The typhoon's outer bands combined with northeast monsoon will bring heavy rains to Taipei and eastern regions. Fung-Wong's center located 170 kilometers (106 miles) southwest of Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻), moving north-northeast at 11 kph (6.8 mph). The storm could weaken to tropical status and exit Thursday (Nov. 13) morning.
The CWA expanded land warnings to include Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Hengchun Peninsula regions. Sea warnings cover Taiwan Strait, southeastern waters, Bashi Channel, and Dongsha Island areas. Central and southern Taiwan face heavy to torrential rain Wednesday (Nov. 12). ◼
