TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Northeast seasonal winds triggered a sharp temperature drop across Taiwan Tuesday (Nov. 18), with Shimen District recording the lowest mainland temperature at 15.8 degrees Celsius (60.4°F). The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署), Taiwan's national weather service, reported thick clouds and rain affecting northern and eastern regions as the cold front intensified.
Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), adjunct associate professor at National Central University (中央大學), warned temperatures will plummet further as cold air moves southward. Wu predicted areas north of Miaoli (苗栗) could experience temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius (53.6°F) Wednesday (Nov. 19) and Thursday (Nov. 20) mornings in his Meteorological Application & Development Foundation (氣象應用推廣基金會) blog post.
European weather models show significant rainfall hitting northern coastal areas, Greater Taipei mountains, and northeastern regions Tuesday. Central and southern Taiwan maintain comfortable daytime temperatures with cooler mornings and evenings. Wu forecasts windward regions will see decreasing moisture Wednesday and Thursday (Nov. 19-20), producing brief localized showers across northern, northeastern, and eastern areas.
Wu projects moisture will continue affecting windward areas Friday through Sunday (Nov. 21-23), bringing occasional short-term rain to northern coastal and northeastern regions. Northeast seasonal winds will weaken by Sunday (Nov. 23), allowing island-wide temperatures to rise, Wu added.
