TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Colombian congressional leaders proposed establishing a Colombian office in Taiwan to enhance trade and cultural exchanges during a high-level visit this week. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) hosted Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Óscar Mauricio Giraldo Hernández and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Álvaro Mauricio Londoño Lugo Tuesday (Nov. 25). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the meeting Wednesday.

Lin emphasized Colombia's role as Taiwan's key trade partner in Latin America, highlighting shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. The foreign minister identified potential collaboration areas including green energy, smart agriculture, and digital innovation technologies. Lin expressed hopes the five-day visit would deepen mutual understanding between the two nations and uncover new cooperation opportunities.

Giraldo expressed enthusiasm for learning about Taiwan's advancements in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and smart healthcare during the delegation's meetings. The Senate Foreign Affairs Committee chairman committed to fostering further bilateral exchanges and cooperation between Colombia and Taiwan. He remarked on witnessing firsthand how Taiwan's knowledge-driven initiatives and technological innovations create economic opportunities and improve quality of life.

Londoño praised Taiwan's achievements in technology and public health and the resilience of the Taiwanese people in facing challenges. The House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman and Giraldo advocated for closer bilateral ties and expanded cooperation during their meetings with Taiwan officials. Both Colombian congressional leaders proposed establishing a Colombian representative office in Taiwan to enhance trade relations, cultural exchanges, and diplomatic engagement.

The Colombian delegation visits Taiwan Monday through Friday (Nov. 24-28) for meetings with government and business organizations. The lawmakers plan to meet with the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and trade development agencies. They will visit the Garden of Hope Foundation (勵馨基金會) and YesHealth iFarm (源鮮智慧農場) to study Taiwan's social and agricultural innovations. ◼
