TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will soon welcome New Zealand travelers to use its automated border clearance, marking a milestone in bilateral cooperation. Minister of the Interior Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) will announce the initiative on Saturday (Nov. 29), symbolizing a new chapter in Taiwan-New Zealand relations.

Officials, including Director Christopher John Langley (梁思齊) of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office and Deputy Director Chang Chun-yu (張俊裕) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will join Director-General Lin Hung-en (林宏恩) of the National Immigration Agency to launch the system. The event will coincide with a celebration of Immigration Day, highlighting the significance of this partnership.

Taiwan's major airports and ports feature 121 automated clearance systems. New Zealand travelers with a chip passport valid for over six months, aged 12 and above, and taller than 120 cm can register for free use. Since Oct. 1, Taiwan has required travelers to complete an online entry form, enhancing entry efficiency when paired with automated clearance.

Lin stated that the government's push for innovative border services will foster tourism, business, and educational exchanges. New Zealand, which opened its eGate system to Taiwanese travelers on Oct. 13, became the eighth country to offer such privileges. Taiwanese travelers must complete the New Zealand Traveller Online Declaration within 24 hours before flying to use the fast-track service.

The shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law underpin the annual exchange of 60,000 visitors between Taiwan and New Zealand. This reciprocal clearance system is set to boost collaboration between the two nations.
