TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) declared Friday (Nov. 28) that anyone who identifies with Taiwan is a member of the country, emphasizing the island's democratic and open society during a public appearance. Lai made the statement during an interview at the historic Tainan Confucian Temple (台南孔廟) before unveiling a commemorative plaque at the cultural site. The president reiterated Taiwan's commitment to inclusivity and freedom for all residents.

Lai addressed the detention of Hsu Chun-ying (徐春鶯) under the Anti-Infiltration Act (反滲透法), a law designed to prevent foreign interference, asserting Taiwan remains governed by the rule of law. The president stated illegal acts must be handled according to legal procedures. Lai urged the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, to avoid amending the Nationality Act in ways that could heighten concerns about Chinese immigrants.

Lai cited multiple examples of foreigners who have embraced Taiwan, including South Korean social media personality "Miss Enoki Mushroom" (金針菇小姐), who actively promotes Taiwan internationally and has funded billboard advertisements in Korea to introduce the island to Korean audiences. The president also mentioned Ukrainian gymnast Larisa Bakurova (瑞莎), who married a Taiwanese citizen and now actively teaches gymnastics to local children across Taiwan. Bakurova has successfully led Taiwanese children in international gymnastics competitions, demonstrating integration into local society.

Lai also mentioned Chiu Chiao-chu (邱巧珠), originally from Fujian, China, who operates an egg wholesale business in Yunlin County, a major agricultural region in central Taiwan. Chiu has gained recognition for her health-focused egg rolls. The president cited her as an example of entrepreneurial success among new residents in Taiwan's local industries. ◼
