TAIPEI (TVBS News) — An archaeology exhibition opened Tuesday (Dec. 2) in Tainan's Anping District (安平區), Taiwan's oldest urban district, showcasing Dutch colonial history through Feb. 28, 2026. The exhibition, "Archaeological Court x Time Embassy — Recreating the Town of Zeelandia" (考古埕x時光使館-再現熱蘭遮市鎮), features light sculpture projections, immersive environments, and historical mystery-solving experiences, marking the city's 400th anniversary.
The exhibition showcases remnants of the Dutch colonial district and Qing-era buildings uncovered by archaeologists, revitalizing ancient sites through advanced technology. Lin Wei-hsu (林韋旭), deputy director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (文化局), Taiwan's municipal cultural agency, emphasized that years of archaeological research in Anping have culminated in a vivid reconstruction of the Dutch colonial city and Tayouan (大員), the historical name of a settlement during the Dutch period.
The city government highlighted the exhibition's trilogy of events, which integrate mobile online games, puzzle-solving activities, guided tours, and children's theater. These activities aim to enhance cultural experiences and historical knowledge through light sculpture projections. Lin said this approach brings Dutch colonial culture to life and integrates technology to invigorate historical and cultural assets.
The exhibition's core of archaeology and technology extends beyond traditional displays. It includes city walks with puzzles, public archaeological experiences, and mini archaeology classes, making the story of Tayouan more accessible and relatable. The exhibition engages the public in dynamic exploration of the past beyond the exhibition space. ◼
