TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan considers sanctions against South Korea after Seoul labeled the island as "China (Taiwan)" on its electronic arrival system, sparking legislative outrage Wednesday (Dec. 10). Taiwanese legislators suggested considering response measures following the controversial designation on the e-arrival platform used by international travelers. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) expressed concern over the mislabeling and urged South Korean authorities to issue a prompt correction.
Minister of Culture Lee Yuan (李遠) addressed the issue before the Education and Culture Committee at the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan's parliament, emphasizing the ministry's role in strengthening Taiwan's cultural identity. Lee stressed Taiwan's distinctiveness from China through cultural initiatives and diplomatic efforts. The minister highlighted increased cultural exchanges between Taiwan and South Korea over recent years, noting growing bilateral cooperation.
Lee noted a recent agreement signed by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA, 文策院) with South Korea's largest conglomerate to produce Taiwan-centric films and TV shows for international audiences. The minister also mentioned increased translation of Taiwanese literary works in South Korea over recent years. Lee said these cultural developments reflect growing interest and understanding of Taiwan as distinct from China over the past two years.
Lee stressed the importance of cultural diplomacy, asserting that many countries recognize the differences between Taiwanese and Chinese cultures through ongoing cultural exchanges. The minister reiterated the ministry's commitment to promoting Taiwan's cultural identity on the global stage through various initiatives. Taiwan navigates complex diplomatic and trade challenges with South Korea, with the situation remaining fluid and potential implications for future bilateral relations.
