TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Environment (環境部) and the Miaoli County Government took a significant step forward in sustainability on Friday (Jan. 16). Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) and Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin (鍾東錦) signed a memorandum of cooperation to establish a "carbon reduction, waste reduction, and value creation" demonstration area in the county's Zhunan Township (竹南鎮), according to a press release.
Minister Peng emphasized Taiwan's progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, noting a 6.7% decrease in net emissions in 2024 compared to the 2005 baseline. He stated that the circular economy is an important strategy for moving towards a net-zero future, and that Taiwan has great potential in this regard. The ministry plans to promote a "climate technology circular park" project, prioritizing public-private partnerships to enhance efficiency in construction and operations.
Chung stated that the signing marks a robust partnership between central and local governments to advance the circular economy. He revealed plans to use approximately 25 hectares of land at the Zhunan landfill as the base for the initiative. He added that signing the letter of intent with the Ministry of Environment symbolizes a solid partnership between the central and local governments in promoting the circular economy.
The Ministry of Environment highlighted that the "climate technology circular park" will align with local industry development characteristics and resource recycling needs. The initiative aims to improve the material circulation system by collaborating with various ministries, local governments, and the circular industry to promote the high-value, localized recycling of resources.
