TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Micron Technology (美光科技) announced on Saturday (Jan. 17) its acquisition of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.'s (力積電) Tongluo P5 wafer plant. This move aims to expand Micron's DRAM production capacity in Taiwan. The acquisition, valued at US$1.8 billion, is set to finalize in the second quarter of 2026, according to Powerchip's announcement on Jan. 17.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs praised the investment, highlighting Taiwan's pivotal role in the global memory supply chain. They emphasized Taiwan's semiconductor strength and comprehensive supply chain. Following Micron's certification, Powerchip will join Micron's advanced DRAM packaging supply and collaborate on niche DRAM processes at Micron's Hsinchu P3 plant.
The ministry noted that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (台積電) investment in the U.S. and Micron's deepening ties in Taiwan illustrate the bidirectional enhancement and cooperation of the Taiwan-U.S. semiconductor supply chain. They stressed that with AI and high-performance computing driving memory demand, international giants are choosing Taiwan for investment, solidifying its position as a core force in global high-end manufacturing and key production capacity.
As the semiconductor industry continues to evolve, Taiwan's strategic importance in the sector grows. Stakeholders and industry watchers should keep an eye on further developments and potential collaborations resulting from this significant acquisition.
