TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold air mass swept across Taiwan, dropping temperatures to a chilling 8.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday (Jan. 22). Residents in northern Taiwan felt the cold more intensely, with temperatures feeling like 4 degrees. Experts advised the public to stay warm as temperatures across the island range from 9 to 11 degrees.
Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) reported localized rain in the northern and eastern regions, while the central and southern areas remain cloudy to clear. Although this cold air mass is not as severe as a cold wave, Wu emphasized the importance of staying warm, especially in northern Taiwan, where persistent dampness may intensify the cold.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a cold surge advisory for 16 counties and cities, warning that temperatures could drop to 10 degrees or lower in areas north of Miaoli, including Keelung and Hualien. Lin De-en (林得恩) from "Mr. Lin's Weather Station" noted that temperatures could fall even further in coastal and open areas, urging the elderly and those with cardiovascular conditions to take extra precautions.
Looking ahead, the weather will warm over Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 24-25), with sunny and stable conditions, though eastern regions may experience sporadic rain. As the northeast monsoon strengthens next Tuesday (Jan. 27), rain and winds will increase in northern and eastern Taiwan, affecting maritime conditions. Authorities have urged caution for coastal activities due to potential swells.
