Su calls for dialogue with China as he takes SEF helm (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Legislative Yuan (立法院) President Su Jia-chyuan (蘇嘉全) assumed the role of chairman at the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF, 海基會), Taiwan's semi-official body handling relations with China, on Friday (Jan. 23). Su emphasized that cross-strait relations fundamentally rely on people rather than slogans. He conveyed this message during the 12th board of directors' first interim joint meeting, highlighting the SEF's core mission to resolve issues from the people's perspective and preserve space for exchanges.

Su noted the decades-long ebb and flow of cross-strait exchanges, stating that trade and social connections are deeply rooted and that interaction shouldn't be paused. Su expressed hope that China, officially known as the People's Republic of China, would prioritize people's interests over political barriers, thereby facilitating normal exchanges. He reiterated that dialogue is not concession, and communication is not retreat. This approach aims to prevent conflicts and create opportunities for problem-solving.

Su assured continued support for Taiwanese businesses operating in China, describing the SEF as a "warm family" for those working abroad. He encouraged these businesses to protect Taiwan's democratic home, fostering a strong societal backbone. Su's appointment comes as cross-strait relations remain tense, with Taiwan seeking to maintain economic ties while preserving its democratic system. ◼
