TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Pingtung County, in southern Taiwan, will unveil its latest landmark, the Hengchun Fire Geological Park (恆春出火地質公園), on Sunday (Feb. 1), according to a press release. Authorities aim to attract visitors with the park's unique natural gas phenomenon and a grand opening featuring performances by the Tjimur Dance Theatre (蒂摩爾古薪舞集), an indigenous Paiwan dance troupe, Taiwanese singer Sauljaljui (戴曉君), and a special concert by rock duo Power Station (動力火車).
Spanning 2.9 hectares, approximately 7.2 acres, the park preserves the rare natural gas "fire" spectacle, a phenomenon caused by natural gas seeping through cracks in the earth and igniting. It features a circular pool designed to create a "fire in water, water in fire" geological theater, according to the county government. To enhance the visitor experience, the park includes an ecological "dense forest" area and stargazing space, offering views both day and night.
The opening ceremony will stream live on the "Pingtung Go Fun" Facebook (屏東go好玩) page, allowing viewers across Taiwan and internationally to watch the festivities remotely. Due to copyright issues, Power Station's performance will not be available online. Visitors can receive limited edition items such as the "Fire Glow Cup," "Fire Towel," and exclusive glow sticks by checking in on social media, while supplies last.
The county's Transportation and Tourism Development Office (交通旅遊處) advises that parking is prohibited at the park on the event day. Traffic control will be in effect on surrounding roads from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with shuttle services provided for attendees. Starting at 4 p.m., ticket holders can board shuttles every 15 minutes from the Hengchun Town Parking Facility to the park. ◼
