TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) forecasts a cooling trend for northern and northeastern Taiwan on Wednesday (Jan. 28) as the northeast monsoon influences the region. This weather pattern will bring localized showers to northern and eastern parts, while central and southern areas may experience scattered rain. Heavy rainfall is likely in the early morning hours in the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei and the northern coast of Keelung (基隆).
The CWA indicated that by daybreak, areas south of Hsinchu are expected to transition to cloudy skies after scattered showers. The northeast monsoon will weaken on Thursday, leading to a daytime temperature rise, although the early morning and evening will remain cold due to radiative cooling. Also, central and southern Taiwan will experience significant temperature fluctuations between day and night.
The CWA reported that most regions will see partly cloudy to clear skies, with only the northern coast of Keelung, eastern areas, and Hengchun (恆春) Peninsula, located at Taiwan's southern tip, expecting isolated showers. The weather will remain mostly clear across the island by Friday, with only the eastern areas and Hengchun Peninsula facing brief showers. A front will pass through on Saturday, strengthening the northeast monsoon and bringing cooler weather to the north and northeast.
Saturday's front will also bring scattered showers in northern and eastern regions. From Sunday (Feb. 1) to Tuesday (Feb. 3), the northeast monsoon is expected to continue to affect Taiwan, maintaining cooler conditions in the north and northeast. Localized rain will persist in northern, eastern, and central mountainous areas, while other regions will enjoy partly cloudy to clear skies. ◼
