TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Air Force demonstrated a six-minute emergency F-16V fighter jet launch on Tuesday (Jan. 27), showcasing rapid response capabilities amid escalating Chinese military incursions near the island's airspace. The Fourth Tactical Fighter Wing at Chiayi Base (嘉義基地) conducted the drill, with pilots and ground crew preparing and launching the aircraft in under seven minutes. The exercise highlighted Taiwan's combat readiness as Chinese military aircraft continue frequent approaches toward the island's air defense identification zone.

The Air Force also announced the procurement of newly acquired OTS-600 cold-weather survival suits, with plans to equip all F-16 pilots by late March. Taiwanese media criticized the timing as "closing the stable door after the horse has bolted," questioning why procurement began only in 2025, given that the jets had served for nearly three decades. The specialized suits provide critical thermal protection for pilots who must eject over cold ocean waters during emergencies.

The criticism follows reports that Hsin Po-yi (辛柏毅), the pilot missing since an F-16V crash on Monday (Jan. 6), was not wearing a cold-weather suit when his aircraft went down. The revelation sparked significant public controversy over Taiwan's military preparedness and equipment procurement priorities. Taiwan's F-16 fleet has operated for nearly 30 years, yet cold-weather suit procurement only commenced in 2025, raising serious questions about pilot safety protocols.

Distribution of the OTS-600 suits began in December 2025, with the specialized gear featuring wool-lined interiors, waterproof outer fabric, and sealing rings at the neck and wrists. Regulations require pilots to wear cold-weather suits during maritime missions when daytime water temperatures drop below 18°C (64.4°F) or nighttime temperatures fall below 20°C (68°F). The suits are designed to extend survival time in cold water following emergency ejections.

Despite delays in the delivery of newly purchased F-16 C/D Block 70 fighter jets from the United States, Taiwan's upgraded F-16V Block 20 aircraft continue to shoulder critical operational responsibilities. Chiayi Base maintains a 24-hour alert status, protecting airspace over central and southern Taiwan and the southwestern air defense identification zone. The base serves as a frontline defense point against Chinese military aircraft approaching Taiwan's territory.

When Air Force Combat Command radar detects Chinese or unidentified aircraft approaching Taiwan's airspace or crossing the Taiwan Strait median line, commanders order emergency takeoffs. During these scramble missions, pilots must wear anti-G suits and survival vests, with helmets pre-positioned on aircraft to save critical seconds during rapid deployment. The protocol ensures Taiwan maintains maximum combat readiness against potential aerial incursions from China. ◼
