TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Elite cameramen who doubled as professional climbers executed the most intricate rope setup in broadcasting history to film Alex Honnold's ropeless ascent of Taipei 101 (台北101) on Sunday (Jan. 25). The Netflix live stream captured the renowned American free climber scaling the 508-meter (1,667-foot) skyscraper without ropes, relying solely on exterior structures and decorative protrusions. Executive producer James Smith described the technical achievement as unprecedented in live broadcast production.
The cameramen meticulously ensured no equipment fell during the live stream while capturing footage from extreme heights on the iconic Taiwan landmark. Taiwan Tourism Association President Chien Yu-yen (簡余晏) praised these behind-the-scenes professionals, calling them the unsung heroes responsible for capturing the breathtaking moments. Smith noted that the production team had collaborated with Honnold for five or six years on his long-standing ambition to scale skyscrapers around the world.
Taipei 101 Chairman Janet Chia (賈永婕) immediately supported the challenge after meeting with Smith a year ago, possibly inspired by Honnold's Oscar-winning documentary "Free Solo." Smith expressed gratitude to the Taipei 101 team, noting that few skyscrapers worldwide would allow a climbing team access to their building for such a dangerous endeavor. The collaboration between Taiwan's landmark tower and the international production team enabled the historic broadcast to reach global audiences.
At a press conference, Honnold shared his hope that the challenge would remind everyone to make meaningful use of their limited time on Earth. Smith recalled the emotional scene in the control room as Honnold reached the summit and embraced his team at the top of the iconic tower. The moment brought tears of relief and joy to staff members who had worked on the complex production for months.
