TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's national weather agency, forecasted a gradual warming trend across the island as the northeast monsoon weakens on Thursday (Jan. 29). While daytime temperatures will rise, radiative cooling will keep mornings and evenings chilly, especially in central and southern regions of the country. The North Coast of Keelung, a major port city in northern Taiwan, eastern areas, and Hengchun (恆春) Peninsula in the south may experience scattered showers throughout the day.
Starting on Friday, most regions will see cloudy skies, with only the eastern areas and the Hengchun Peninsula expected to experience brief showers. A cold front will pass on Saturday, strengthening the northeast monsoon and bringing cooler weather to northern and northeastern Taiwan. Rain will be more prevalent in the east, southeast, and Hengchun Peninsula, while central areas will transition to scattered showers as the system moves through.
The CWA noted that the northeast monsoon will continue to affect northern and northeastern Taiwan from Sunday to Tuesday (Feb. 1-3), maintaining cool conditions across these regions. Showers will occur briefly in these areas on Sunday, with the central, eastern, and southeastern regions, as well as the Hengchun Peninsula, experiencing occasional rain. By Monday, rain is expected to become more localized, affecting northern, northeastern, eastern, and central mountainous areas throughout the day.
The CWA added that the North Coast of Keelung, Greater Taipei Mountain Area, and eastern regions will receive brief showers on Tuesday (Feb. 3), while other areas will see partly cloudy to clear skies. The northeast monsoon will weaken on Wednesday (Feb. 4), allowing temperatures to rise in the north and northeast, with most areas enjoying partly cloudy to sunny weather. Only the southeast and Hengchun Peninsula may have isolated showers as the warming trend continues across the island. ◼
