TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Tigerair Taiwan (台灣虎航) signed a deal on Wednesday (Feb. 4) to purchase four Airbus A321neo aircraft, marking the budget carrier's first acquisition of the larger narrow-body model. The agreement aims to bolster the airline's fleet and enhance operational efficiency in the regional market, Airbus announced in a press release. The purchase represents a significant expansion for Taiwan's low-cost carrier sector.

Tigerair Taiwan currently operates 17 A320 family aircraft, comprising nine A320ceo and eight A320neo models. The A321neo introduction will allow the airline to continue benefiting from commonalities within the A320 family, ensuring seamless integration into existing operations. The new aircraft will support the airline's goals of building a more fuel-efficient fleet and reducing emissions compared with older planes. The fleet expansion reflects growing demand for budget air travel in the Asia-Pacific region.

Joyce Huang (黃世惠), chairwoman of Tigerair Taiwan, emphasized the strategic importance of this purchase. "The purchase of A321neo aircraft is a cornerstone of our 'third-generation' fleet expansion, designed to maximise operational efficiency as we scale for regional dominance," she said. "Configured with 232 seats, the A321neo allows us to increase capacity on our high-demand 'golden routes' and accelerate network expansion."

"We are pleased to see Tigerair Taiwan reaffirm its confidence in Airbus as it takes another step in its fleet growth," said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President of commercial aircraft sales. "The A321neo is the ideal platform for Tigerair Taiwan to capture growing demand while maintaining its commitment to cost-effective operations." The deal strengthens Airbus's presence in Taiwan's aviation market.

Airbus said the company has received over 10,000 orders from more than 130 global customers for A320neo family aircraft. The manufacturer emphasized that all Airbus aircraft can operate on up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), made from biomass rather than petroleum. Airbus plans to manufacture aircraft capable of operating entirely on SAFs by 2030. The sustainability push aligns with global aviation industry efforts to reduce carbon emissions. ◼
