TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold front approaching Taiwan will bring significant temperature drops and scattered showers starting Friday (Feb. 6), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). Before the front arrives, Thursday will see mostly cloudy to sunny skies across the island. Western regions will experience significant temperature differences between day and night, while eastern and southeastern areas, along with the Hengchun (恆春) Peninsula, will see scattered showers.
The CWA reported the cold front will approach on Friday, bringing localized rain to the east, southeast, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Northern, northeastern, and central-southern mountainous regions will also see intermittent showers, while other areas remain mostly cloudy. From Friday evening through Saturday, the front's passage combined with a strong continental cold air mass will cause temperatures to drop significantly in central, northern, northeastern, and eastern Taiwan. Other regions will feel the chill in the early morning and evening.
The CWA said brief showers will persist in the north, northeast, and east, with sporadic rain in the southeast, Hengchun Peninsula, and central-southern mountains. Other regions will remain cloudy throughout this period with overcast skies expected. Cold conditions will continue from Sunday to Monday morning as the continental cold air mass remains strong. The air mass will slightly weaken by Monday afternoon, but temperatures will stay low across most of Taiwan.
The CWA noted that temperatures will rise on Tuesday (Feb. 10), though mornings and evenings will remain cool, particularly in central-southern Taiwan. By Wednesday (Feb. 11), the northeast monsoon or continental air mass will strengthen, causing a slight temperature drop in the north and northeast. Scattered showers are expected in the north, east, and Hengchun Peninsula as the weather pattern shifts again. ◼
