TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Formosa Plastics Group (台塑企業) has achieved significant recognition for its environmental efforts, as the climate organization CDP named seven of its nine publicly listed companies among a top group of global firms receiving dual "A" ratings in "Climate Change" and "Water Security." According to a press release by Formosa Plastics, the CDP announced these results in 2025, placing Formosa Plastics among only 172 companies worldwide and 20 in Taiwan to earn this distinction.
Formosa Plastics states that its success in climate governance stems from four core strengths: a clear governance framework, forward-looking risk assessment, comprehensive target setting, and tangible carbon reduction results. This includes steps such as linking climate performance to compensation mechanisms for directors and management, as well as the transparent disclosure of data regarding Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions categories. The CDP awarded an "A" rating to seven Formosa companies for climate change disclosures, a recognition shared by 743 companies globally and 48 in Taiwan.
In the water security domain, eight Formosa companies secured an "A" rating, joining 260 companies worldwide and 31 in Taiwan. Formosa's continuous water footprint audits and verification, coupled with enhanced water risk identification, contributed significantly to this rating. The group said that it has demonstrated high scientific management capabilities by achieving a water recycling efficiency of 12.9 cycles per drop through advanced water resource recovery technology.
Looking ahead, Formosa Plastics plans to eliminate the need for cooling water, produce no wastewater discharge, and and achieve zero leakages of process materials. The CDP, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project, helps companies and other entities to disclose their environmental impacts. The organization states that it aims to make environmental reporting and climate-related risk management standard business practice in order to achieve a sustainable economy.
