TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) forecast a cold front arriving Saturday (Feb. 7), bringing significantly colder weather to Taiwan through early Monday (Feb. 9). Regions from central Taiwan northward will experience a noticeable temperature drop, with cooler conditions expected in other areas during mornings and evenings. The cold wave will continue through Sunday (Feb. 8) to early Monday (Feb. 9) morning, with extremely cold conditions expected across the island.
The CWA said rain is likely on Saturday (Feb. 7) along Keelung's north coast, in Greater Taipei's mountainous areas, and in the northeast, with possible heavier rain in some areas. The east, southeast, and Hengchun (恆春) Peninsula, as well as central and southern mountain areas, will see isolated showers, while other regions remain mostly cloudy. Scattered brief showers are expected on Sunday (Feb. 8) in areas north of Taoyuan, the eastern half of Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula, and mountainous regions in western Taiwan. Other areas will see cloudy to sunny conditions, while southern Taiwan may experience isolated, brief showers in the early morning.
The cold front will begin to weaken later on Monday (Feb. 9), though temperatures will remain low across Taiwan. The administration said most regions will experience mostly cloudy to clear skies starting Monday, except for isolated showers along the north coast, eastern areas, and the Hengchun Peninsula. The CWA said temperatures will rise on Tuesday (Feb. 10), though mornings and evenings will remain chilly, especially in central and southern regions. The administration added that a slight temperature drop is expected in the north and northeast on Wednesday (Feb. 11) as a northeasterly monsoon or strong continental cold air mass moves southward.
The administration said the northeast monsoon or continental air mass will influence Taiwan on Thursday (Feb. 12), bringing cold temperatures across the island, with northern and northeastern Taiwan experiencing relatively chilly daytime conditions. The cold wave is expected to decline on Friday (Feb. 13), with temperatures rebounding, while mornings and evenings remain cooler. ◼
