TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung City Government has launched a trial operation for the Yessen Animal School (野森動物學校) on the southern end of Neimen Zizhu Temple (內門紫竹寺). Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) attended the opening ceremony on Feb. 10, declaring it a new landmark in East Kaohsiung, blending life education, animal conservation, and tourism.
The city government has actively sought private investment to transform 11.5 hectares of land into a vibrant hub, combining life education, animal conservation, local culture, and tourism. Officials expect this initiative to boost tourism and stimulate economic growth in East Kaohsiung and its surrounding industries. Chen expressed gratitude to Zizhu Temple for offering the land at a symbolic rent, saving the city significant acquisition costs.
Chen commended private teams for their investment in resources, which has enhanced Neimen's tourism environment. The park operates with a low-impact, animal-friendly model, featuring over 20 animal species, including foxes, Harris's hawks, and capybaras. The design focuses on the needs of animals and includes unique photo spots and dining services.
This recreational tourism park was built and funded by the city government, with commissioning to a professional team afterwards. The park draws inspiration from local culture, particularly the Song Jiang Battle Array (宋江藝陣). The park preserves native bamboo forests and wildlife habitats, with ground designs at the entrance depicting local species like the masked palm civet and crab-eating mongoose.
During holidays, the park will feature diabolo, acrobatics, and magic shows, providing family-friendly entertainment options. Officials encourage visitors to use public transportation, with additional shuttle services available on holidays. As the park continues its trial, residents and tourists alike can anticipate a unique blend of education, conservation, and cultural experiences.
