TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Zoo (台北市立動物園) announced plans to renovate its tropical rainforest area, aiming to improve animal welfare and update aging facilities. The zoo will relocate Asian elephants Yu-Hsin (友信) and Yu-Kai (友愷) to the African animal area by mid-2026. Zoo officials are aligning with international trends in professional zoo development.

The zoo, which moved from Yuanshan (圓山) to Muzha (木柵) in 1986, is nearing its 40th anniversary. When the new location opened, many phases of construction were still underway. The Asian tropical rainforest area, completed in 1997, was part of the second phase of development. The current elephant house has welcomed visitors and elephants for nearly 30 years.

In 1986, the zoo's relocation included Asian elephants Lin Wang (林旺) and Malan (馬蘭), who first inhabited a temporary area at Muzha. The iconic white arched elephant house, known as "Lin Wang's White House," marked this transition. Yu-Hsin and Yu-Kai, who joined the zoo in 1987, have lived in various areas, including the children's zoo.

The zoo plans to transfer other animals, such as the Malayan tiger, sun bear, and leopard, following the elephants' move. Zoo officials encourage visitors to create lasting memories with the animals around the Lunar New Year. The tropical rainforest area, featuring tall trees and dense vegetation, has attracted diverse species since its completion in 1997.

The zoo provides the elephants with spacious housing and a professional care team for daily training and health monitoring. Outdoor facilities include sand pits and pools, enhancing the elephants' natural foraging behaviors. The renovations promise to continue this legacy of care and innovation.
