TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Residents in Taiwan can expect a brief respite from the rain as the northeast monsoon weakens on Thursday (Feb. 26), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). Temperatures will rise to between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius, with only scattered showers expected in areas north of Taoyuan, the eastern region, and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島).

Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) noted that the latest European model (ECMWF) simulations show a temporary break in the weather, with mostly cloudy skies and occasional rain in the eastern part of the island. He observed that temperatures will rise noticeably, with the north experiencing comfortable conditions and the central and southern regions feeling slightly warm. Wu added that another front will move in tonight, increasing cloud cover.

The CWA warned that chances of rain will increase as a front approaches in the evening, bringing unstable weather over the 228 holiday weekend. Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) explained on Facebook that Friday (Feb. 27), the first day of the holiday, will see cooler temperatures in the north and Yilan as the northeast monsoon strengthens.

The eastward movement of a cloud and rain zone from South China will heighten the risk of rain across the island on Saturday (Feb. 28). Tainan and northern areas, the eastern region, and southern mountainous areas will experience sporadic showers. Wu emphasized that the rain will extend southward, particularly affecting the central and northern regions.

Sunday (March 1) will see the rain zone gradually shift northward, impacting the central and northern regions, the east, and southern mountainous areas with localized showers. Wu projected that a brief weather break will arrive Sunday afternoon, lasting until Monday (March 2) morning, bringing warmer conditions.
