TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold snap blanketed Taiwan's Yushan (玉山) with snow early Wednesday (March 4) morning, marking a dramatic shift in weather conditions as temperatures plummeted to minus 2.1 degrees Celsius. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported this rare snowfall at the Yushan Weather Station (玉山氣象站), where ice and rime ice also formed.
Meteorologists noted that while the snow accumulation remains minimal, the broader weather across Taiwan could include sporadic rainfall due to the influence of the cloud and rain area from southern China. Rainfall is expected to be more pronounced during the morning, with localized showers persisting into the afternoon. The CWA advised residents to carry rain gear when venturing outdoors to prepare for possible downpours.
The northeast monsoon also caused temperatures to dip, with early morning lows of 14 to 16 degrees Celsius in the northern and central regions and in Yilan, creating a damp, chilly atmosphere. Daytime highs are expected to reach 19 to 21 degrees Celsius in northern and central areas, Yilan and Hualien, while southern regions and Taitung may see temperatures of 23 or 24 degrees Celsius.
Forecasters from the CWA indicated that if moisture and temperature conditions align, mountains above 3,500 meters could experience snowfall or solid precipitation, with high-altitude roads at risk of frost or ice accumulation. As Taiwan continues to face fluctuating weather patterns, residents should remain vigilant and prepared for sudden changes.
