TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) said Tuesday (March 24) that U.S. officials have expressed concerns about Taiwan's energy supply. Lu stated that insufficient power could impact the island's livelihood, industry, and national security. Lu, who returned from the U.S. on Saturday, shared these insights during an interview. Her remarks came days after President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced plans to restart two nuclear power plants.

Lu emphasized that U.S. concerns about Taiwan's energy issues are not new, as many American associates have expressed similar worries. When asked if U.S. pressure influenced President Lai's nuclear policy, Lu said she was unsure but believed the president possessed more information than she does. Lu noted, "If I could receive concerns from the U.S. on this issue, it is likely that President Lai has more comprehensive data."

President Lai announced Saturday (March 21) that the Ministry of Economic Affairs (經濟部) deems two nuclear plants suitable for restarting. These include the Guosheng Nuclear Power Plant (核二廠) in New Taipei City's Wanli District (萬里) and the Ma-anshan Nuclear Power Plant (核三廠) in Pingtung County's Hengchun Township (恆春). Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower, 台電) plans to submit a proposal to the Nuclear Safety Commission (核安會) for review by the end of March. ◼
