TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Temperatures soared above 30°C (86°F) across Taiwan on Friday (April 10), with southern inland areas and southeastern Taitung reaching up to 36°C (97°F). The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) warned that a strong southwest wind could damage crops in Taitung.
The CWA forecast scattered showers for northern Taiwan and Yilan after midday Saturday, with higher rain probabilities in the afternoon. The agency cautioned that strong winds could affect offshore and coastal areas and urged caution for beachgoers. A distant typhoon that formed over the ocean early Friday morning poses no threat to Taiwan.
Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) warned that ultraviolet rays reached excessive levels Friday and advised people to apply sunscreen when outdoors. Lin explained that UV rays penetrate from various directions, maintaining 50 to 80% intensity even in shaded or cloudy conditions. Relying solely on direct sunlight protection often proves inadequate, he said.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) reported that a tropical depression southeast of Guam developed into this year's fourth typhoon, Sinlaku, at 2 a.m. Friday. Sinlaku will make a "big turn" south of Japan, staying far from both Taiwan and Japan, Wu said. The trajectory aligns with climatological data showing April typhoons do not impact Taiwan. ◼
