TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Delta Electronics (台達電) launched its next-generation 800V high-voltage direct current power architecture on Tuesday (Sept. 1), targeting AI data centers with energy-conversion efficiency of up to 92%. The Taiwanese power solutions company said the system reduces equipment size by 30% and increases power density by 30% compared with traditional setups.

Next-generation AI chips now consume more than 2,000 watts each, with a single AI cabinet drawing up to 1 megawatt, said Dr. Chiu Huang-Jen (邱煌仁), chief technology officer of Delta Electronics' Power and System Business Group. That power demand equals operating 2,000 household refrigerators simultaneously, Chiu said, speaking at the SEMICON Taiwan forum.

 

AI chip power consumption has surged from approximately 400 watts in 2020 to more than 1,000 to 2,000 watts as computational models have expanded, Chiu said. The increase has pushed AI data center power usage into the gigawatt range, creating urgent demand for more efficient power delivery systems that can handle higher loads with less energy loss.

Traditional 54V power architectures require more than 800 kg (1,764 lbs) of conductive copper bars to support a 1-megawatt cabinet, creating significant challenges from high current-induced heat and energy loss. Delta's 800V HVDC centralized architecture reduces transmission line losses and improves end-to-end power conversion efficiency to 89%, the company said.

 
The system uses solid-state transformers to convert medium-voltage electricity into 800V high-voltage direct current, achieving maximum efficiency of 92%. Delta employs third-generation semiconductor materials, including gallium nitride and silicon carbide, to develop high-power-density DC-DC conversion modules. The technology also enables sub-1V chip-level ultra-high-current power supply capabilities.

Delta also showcased cooling solutions ranging from chip-level to facility-wide systems, using liquid-to-air and liquid-to-liquid technologies to eliminate computational hotspots. The company has integrated solid oxide fuel cells, solar power, wind power and energy storage systems to create microgrids. A modular data center architecture reduces deployment time by 40% to 60%, Delta said. ◼
