TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A deadly hornet attack during a hiking event in New Taipei City's Ruifang District has left two men dead and nine others injured, local authorities reported on Wednesday (Sept. 20).

The hornets, disturbed during their feeding activities, injured 11 people in their violent assault. The officials shared that four victims are in critical condition, while seven others, although wounded, can move independently.

Members of the devastated hiking group were helped off the mountain by their leader and taken to nearby medical facilities. Sadly, two male participants succumbed to their injuries following arrival at the hospital.

New Taipei City's Bureau of Animal Protection stated that interference from the hiking group led to an aggressive reaction from the foraging insects.

The Bureau has outlined four preventative measures against hornet attacks in response to the tragic incident.

The guidelines include avoiding venturing into a hornet's warning zone, dressing in light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and wearing a light-colored hat, avoiding perfume or fragrant skin products during outdoor activities, staying on the main trails and avoiding straying off. If one unfortunately finds themselves in a hornet's warning zone, they should retreat slowly while using clothes or a hat to protect their head.

Public vigilance is urged during outdoor excursions to prevent such horrific incidents from recurring.
