Snowfall, hail hit Yangmingshan amid Taiwan’s cold wave

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Yangmingshan Anbu Weather Station, reported by the Central Weather Administration (CWA), saw hail detected at midnight on Tuesday (Jan. 23), followed by rain mixed with snow in the early morning.

By 6 a.m., as the rain eased, accumulated snow reached a depth of one centimeter.

 

The lowest temperature of 0.1℃ on Tuesday occurred at 5:16 a.m. The CWA reminded the public to dress warmly and prioritize safety while driving, particularly those who ventured uphill early to take in the snow scenes.

Citizens throughout Taiwan are proactively bracing for an incoming intense cold wave. Notable accumulations of snow were immediately observed at the Yangmingshan Anbu Weather Station and the east peak of Qixing Mountain in Taipei, as well as Lala Mountain and Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area in Taoyuan.

Meteorologist Peng Chi-ming said the coldest period of this strongest cold wave falls on the Tuesday and Wednesday.
 

During the early morning hours, temperatures generally ranged between 5℃ to 14℃.

Northern regions were 8℃ to 10℃, central areas were 9℃ to 11℃, southern urban areas were 11℃ to 13℃, and Hualien-Taitung area was 11℃ to 14℃.

In more open areas, temperatures will decrease slightly by 1℃ to 2℃. A gradual warming trend is expected to begin on the Thursday.
