TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) expressed regret Monday (Jan. 29) that Chinese media personality Wang Zhian has yet to admit his statement about a disabled person was in error. DPP spokesperson, Justin Wu, announced the party will no longer respond to Wang's remarks.

Wang sparked controversy on The Night Night Show with Hello by mocking legislator-at-large candidate Chen Chun-han, who is disabled and has spinal muscular atrophy. Despite publicly apologizing, Wu criticized Wang's attempt to politicize and mask his derogatory comments about people with disabilities.

Wu emphasized that regardless of political considerations, the DPP would continue to promote a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination. He warned those who seek to shift focus away from the issue.

Wu indicated that, although Wang wrote a letter to the DPP on Jan. 24, he still failed to admit his mistake in his remarks. This resulted in the DPP's decision to refrain from responding further to Wang's statements.

Wu noted that Chen, within the Tsai Ing-wen administration, is a highly regarded professional in human rights law.

The DPP aims to continue advocating for marginalized groups and people with disabilities and anticipates society's joint effort in upholding the dignity and equality of everyone to advance the rights journey of those with disabilities.
