TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen inspected a quantum computer project funded by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and Academia Sinica on Monday (Jan. 29), witnessing the creation of Taiwan's first self-developed, five-qubit superconducting complete system quantum computer.

Tsai positively acknowledged the five-qubit quantum computer developed by Academia Sinica in just two years and expressed her expectations for the quantum team to ensure Taiwan's crucial position in the quantum technology field.

James C. Liao, president of Academia Sinica, revealed the institution will continue investing in the southern campus's quantum base, moving from basic experimental development to practical application, a process known as "vertical integration."

Liao also indicated that Academia Sinica has accumulated significant research and development capabilities in the quantum technology field, including achievements in quantum computer chip design, production, and state control and reading techniques for quantum bits.

In 2023, Academia Sinica successfully developed Taiwan's first five-qubit quantum chip and put the quantum computer system on the cloud for partner testing, joining the ranks of countries with self-made superconducting quantum computers.

This achievement has had a large demonstrative and inspirational effect on domestic quantum technology research.
