PARIS (TVBS News) — Taiwan is in the spotlight at the 30th Festival International des Cinémas d'Asie (FICA), which kicked off Wednesday (Feb. 7). The nation is the theme country for the event this year, showcasing a series of films from the era of martial law to the new generation of directors.

Director Jean-Robert Thomann, holding dual citizenship from France and Taiwan, has entered his latest documentary, "Taiwan, Chronicle of a Threatened Democracy," into FICA's documentary competition.

Thomann, who acquired Republic of China (Taiwan) citizenship in 2019, has focused on Taiwan's culture and politics for years. His new documentary, filmed between 2021 and 2023, explores the threat to Taiwan's democratic process through an in-depth review of the nation's four major referendums of 2021 and the Taichung legislator election in 2022.

For Thomann, Taiwan's existence extends beyond seeking a seat in the United Nations. It is also about promoting the nation through parliamentary links, cultural and economic exchanges, and soft power based on creativity.

He believes that Taiwan is recognized globally for its economic and strategic importance. He also hopes French audiences, after watching his documentary, will have a deeper understanding of Taiwan and will be inclined to learn more about the country.

Thomann stated that threats to Taiwan do not only come externally but also internally, with democracies worldwide facing challenges from social media and fake news. These threats are particularly severe in Taiwan, with social media manipulating public opinion, and certain politicians fanning the flames, oversimplifying debates.

Thomann said he is deeply troubled and puzzled by the many irrational phenomena in Taiwanese politics, such as excessive exaggeration in describing the government, which he believes undermines true democratic debate.

Despite these shortcomings, Thomann views Taiwan as a splendid example of democracy, especially in Asia, and holds high hopes for the island's democratic system.

Thomann's documentary made its global premiere at this year's FICA and is scheduled to be screened in France, Taiwan, and Sweden.
