TSMC's cutting-edge chip tech to stay in Taiwan: NDC (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — National Development Council (NDC) Minister Kung Ming-hsin reaffirmed on Wednesday (March 6) that the most advanced processing techniques of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will remain in Taiwan.

Kung spoke before the Economic Committee of the Legislative Yuan, discussing TSMC's global expansion plans and the methods employed by Taiwan to maintain industrial competitiveness.

He said the future's large-scale demand for artificial intelligence (AI) necessitates chipsets with advanced processing of 2 to 3 nanometers, which is the critical factor driving TSMC's capacity expansion.

Not only Kaohsiung and the Central Taiwan Science Park, but also potentially Chiayi could have wafer sealing factories to respond to future demand for chipsets, Kung said.

The minister pointed out that Taiwan's supply chain is becoming more complete. From materials suppliers, equipment providers, to IC design, the ecosystem is healthier.

Kung added that land is precious in Taiwan, making it unlikely that all of TSMC's production will remain there.

As TSMC is setting up factories overseas to meet international demand and allow mature processes to move abroad, Kung stressed the most advanced processing techniques remain in Taiwan.
