NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Sports Department announced on Wednesday (Mar. 6) that it plans to construct a large-capacity sports dome to accommodate 50,000 people, prioritizing a site alongside the MRT route.
That same day, New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih, attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the second Banqiao Civil Sports Center and announced that, inspired by the success of the Taipei Dome, he intends for the new project to appeal to crowds from Taipei and Taoyuan.
Mayor Hou stated that they will gradually start hosting cultural activities in New Taipei's stadiums and believes that the current Banqiao First Stadium and Banqiao Second Stadium are very suitable. He intends to communicate with the local residents to mitigate the impact of the construction.
The New Taipei City Sports Department mentioned that the planned dome will exceed the dome's capacity proposed in Taichung. Before its completion, existing venues will be made available for cultural and entertainment activities. Changes will be made to stadium use regulations so venues such as the Banqiao First Stadium and the Xinzhuang Baseball Stadium can host large-scale concerts and other events.
The Taichung Dome is set to have its groundbreaking ceremony following Monday. It's anticipated to be in full operation by 2030.
