TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) caucus in the Legislative Yuan (立法院) defended the government's increased defense budget on Friday (Aug. 16), emphasizing the importance of national security and urging the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) to unite against China's military threats.
The DPP's response came after KMT legislators questioned the proposed defense budget for next year, which, for the first time, is set to exceed 2.6% of Taiwan's gross domestic product (GDP). KMT members expressed concerns that this increase could strain other budgetary needs.
At a press conference held Friday morning at the Legislative Yuan, the DPP caucus argued that safeguarding the nation's security is paramount. DPP caucus secretary-general Rosalia Wu (吳思瑤) stated that the historic high of the defense budget, at 2.6% of GDP, demonstrates Taiwan's commitment to self-defense to its democratic allies.
Wu pointed out that Taiwan's defense spending remains relatively low compared to other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. She stressed the central government's efforts to expand the defense budget, hoping for bipartisan support. Wu also highlighted that China poses a significant threat to Taiwan's security and urged the KMT not to shift the burden onto the government.
The DPP's stance underscores the ongoing debate over national defense priorities and the need for unity in the face of external threats. As Taiwan continues to bolster its defense capabilities, the government seeks to demonstrate its commitment to self-defense and resilience.
